Covid-19: London Underground
As I began venturing back into London as the first lockdown began to ease, there was a feeling of disbelief - to see and experience the eery emptiness and almost pin-drop silence of the London Underground; spaces that would otherwise be so bustling and full of life. As I walked through the stations’ concourses, tunnels and platforms, I was captivated by the Covid signs and tannoy announcements – it felt like existing in an alternate reality or dystopian future. The eery feeling coupled with a sense of excitement that I had the opportunity to capture these vast, cavernous spaces, in a way that would otherwise never be possible.
My hope is that this series captures the atmosphere of the troubling and challenging times that Covid has brought us. My greater hope is that scenes like these will soon be a distant memory and a thing of the past. And that we can all once again enjoy standing pressed up against each other, awkwardly avoiding one another’s eye contact whilst standing in a hot central line tube carriage at rush hour on a hot summer’s day. I for one will be doing that with a great big smile on my face, remembering the time that left the underground deserted.
